Small Antique American Frontier Wooden Chest

A small antique pine chest with a hinged lid.
 
It appears to be constructed from another piece of furniture as the decoration on the outside is not symmetrical. The exterior was covered with leather which has since been removed. The leather would have made it waterproof for traveling into the west of America.
 
Inside the chest is lined with some very old American newspaper articles with dates from the early 1800’s! 
 
No key to the lock.
